He hoped to quench the row of young maples lining the path above, but the pump gave only silence. Milo loosened a corroded cap; flakes fluttered out like brittle leaves. Another push sent a cough of air and a brown trickle, then nothing.

He stepped back, noticing a plank that tilted below the pump’s base. The wood sagged at one edge, revealing a dark seam. Milo wedged a flat stone under the other side, and the board flipped aside with a groan. Cool air drifted upward. When the bucket brimmed, he hauled it up, the rim rattling against the pump’s frame. He carried the load to the first maple, tilting the water over the base until the dry earth darkened. Leaves lifted as moisture sank. A breeze rustled through the crowns, spreading new scent across the terrace. Behind him, spare water shimmered inside the plank-lined hole, ready for another bucket if daylight held. Clear water rested in the dented bucket beside the silent pump.
