Milo crossed the cracked asphalt outside a disused freight yard, sketchbook tucked under his arm. Rusty rails cut the ground in crooked lines, and waist-high grass pressed through broken concrete, turning the forgotten lot into an urban wilderness. He stopped at a chain-link gate, pressed a palm against the latch, and pushed. The metal refused to move. He shifted his weight, pressed harder; the hinge shrieked, then swung wide, releasing a dry odor of oil and iron.

Inside, rows of idle boxcars stretched like silent walls. Prolonged exposure to sunlight had warmed every surface; when Milo laid a hand on a steel ladder, his fingers snapped back, shaking. Immense clutter filled the space between wagons—bent pallets, frayed rope, an upturned wheelbarrow. He stepped sideways, careful to avoid scattered debris that glittered with bottle glass. A dented metal drum rested near one track; its faded paint peeled away in curly strips.

He crouched, opened his sketchbook, and began tracing the outline of a distant locomotive. A deep metallic rumble rolled through the air. Beyond the far fence, a working line sent a string of container wagons clattering past. The rush of wind knifed through narrow gaps, lifted grit, and slapped the pages of Milo’s book until they fluttered like startled birds. He braced the cover with an elbow. Behind him, the drum tipped, wobbled, and started to roll. First one slow turn, then a quicker bounce carried it over gravel toward the rails where he knelt.

Milo sprang sideways; the drum grazed his boot and continued, gathering rhythm. It struck a timber beam, changed direction, and rattled beneath a parked boxcar. The sketchbook slipped from his grip, landed face-down in a shallow puddle, and soaked the corner pages. He snatched it up, water dripping from the cardboard edge. The passing train’s final carriage slid out of sight; the wind dropped just as suddenly, leaving only the pulse of settling metal.

He wiped moisture from the paper, lines of charcoal now blurred into broad shadows. A dog barked somewhere outside the yard, then silence expanded between the carriages. The drum had stopped under the boxcar, half hidden in shade, no longer moving.

Dust hung above the tracks.

他蹲下，打開素描本，開始勾勒遠處機車的輪廓。低沉的金屬轟鳴滾過空氣。遠處圍籬外，工作線的數節貨櫃車轟隆經過。風從窄縫中鑽入，捲起砂礫，猛力翻動米洛的紙頁，像受驚的鳥拍翅。他用手肘壓住封面。身後，金屬桶傾斜、搖晃，開始滾動。先是一圈慢轉，接著加快，朝他跪著的鐵軌滾來。

米洛側跳閃開，桶擦過他的鞋，繼續前衝，撞上一根木梁後改變方向，在停放的車廂下嘎啦作響。素描本滑落，正面朝下落進淺水窪，邊角浸濕。他撈起素描本，水珠沿硬紙滴落。列車最後一節車廂掠過，風驟然止息，只剩金屬逐漸平息的脈動。

他抹去紙上的水痕，木炭線條漫成大片陰影。場外傳來狗吠，隨後寂靜在車廂間擴散。那只桶停在陰影裡，不再移動。
