Morning light rested on the wet paths of the city zoo. Milo, a new zookeeper, balanced a folded fishing net against his shoulder. He had set aside the morning to clear autumn leaves today. The leaves floated along the narrow river that crossed the park. Leaves have gathered all week, clogging the slow bends. Spray from the walrus pool had already turned the stone walkway slick. The path had been washed early that morning, yet puddles still shivered near the drain. A feeding cart stood beside the next enclosure. It blocked half the space near the polar bear window. The heavy mesh shifted, pulling his arms sideways with every careful step. Warm sunlight touched his neck while traffic hum mixed with distant gulls.
A sudden gust rolled across the pool, catching the loose edge of the net. The bundle escaped his grip, skidded over the low railing, and splashed down. Water slapped the concrete; drops leapt onto Milo's boots. The walrus turned, whiskers twitching, and nudged the bright mesh with a broad snout. Milo searched for a pole beside the tool shed. Behind him, the polar bear rose behind the glass and pressed one paw against it. His elbow struck an empty bucket, and metal clattered across the floor. He crouched, slid the pole under the floating bundle, yet water made the load sag. The walrus lifted the other side, pushing upward with unexpected strength. Together, pole and tusks raised the dripping net onto the path. Streams ran off the mesh and hurried toward a drain. Wind flattened the wet cords while Milo knelt breathing slow, even clouds.
Translation
