Riley steadied one end of a broad maple bench while Mateo grasped the other. Dawn light entered the exhibition hall through tall windows, striking unfinished walls that still smelled of fresh plaster. Across the floor, crates of ceramic bowls and woven baskets waited for placement, but the bench drew every glance; fine craftsmanship traced each curve, and tiny dovetails along the legs locked together without a nail in sight. Many in town counted Riley as a quiet trailblazer for mixing hidden steel pins with wood, yet the cuffs of his shirt carried sawdust like any ordinary worker. Mateo, still a journeyman, copied his companion’s grip, knees bending to find leverage.
A narrow service door stood between them and the display platform. They lifted. The bench swung forward, met the frame, and stopped. Grain against metal produced a low scrape. Riley shuffled sideways; Mateo tilted his end, hoping the diagonal angle would clear the way. The top edge slid through, but one leg rasped against the jamb and refused to pass. They set the weight down, breath hanging pale in the cool air. Around them, trolleys rattled, ladders clinked, and the rhythm of preparation pressed on. Mateo wiped his palms on his trousers, then tried again, twisting the rear leg inward. Wood creaked; the bench shifted, and the pair edged it over the threshold.
Mid-pivot, an unseen latch freed itself. A thin drawer slipped from beneath the seat, striking the floor before either hand reached it. A cloth pouch burst open, and a bounty of wooden marbles scattered like pebbles set loose by rain. The spheres clattered across the polished concrete, knocking against chair legs, exhibition plinths, and each other in bright echoes. One marble bounced beneath a rolling trolley, redirecting its wheel so that a stack of empty frames slewed sideways; the frames bumped a ladder, prompting the tall structure to tremble before settling again. Workers paused, eyes tracing the sudden pattern of movement that traveled outward from the single escaped drawer.
Riley crouched first, corralling the nearest marbles with curved palms. Mateo followed, herding others with the flat of a clipboard until small piles formed against the wall. No supervisor called for order; the hall’s hum simply adjusted, absorbing the interruption the way wind folds into trees. When the last marble reached its corner refuge, the two men lifted the bench once more, now lighter by a drawer, and eased it onto the raised platform. The last marble spun once near the wall and settled.
Translation
