In early spring, an ecologist crouched on cracked harbor boards. He planned to lower a new temperature sensor into the shallow bay. Seaweed threads gripped each post, showing seasons of growth. Barnacles marked the line where winter water had once frozen. Along the lowest rung, a layer of algae was pressed flat by last night's waves. A faint breeze moved salty air across his cheek, while distant gulls beat uneven rhythms above. He has measured this habitat through many tides, yet the rails now wobbled. A plastic device attached to a thin orange cable waited inside an open toolbox beside his knee.
He slipped the cable over the edge, but the tide pulled it sideways. Water hit the pier piles in uneven beats, shaking his balance. To keep the sensor steady, he reached for a long bamboo pole stored under the toolbox. He tied the cable to the pole, then pushed both hands against the smooth shaft. The board beneath him creaked, but the pole stretched the cable toward open water. An unexpected shape rose from the shadows, twisting around the orange line. Small suction cups clung to the wire; a mottled octopus inspected the strange rope. With a gentle pull, the creature dragged the cable beneath the piling, undoing his careful knot. Sea water blurred the markings on the device, and his original plan drifted away with the tide. He released the pole and wiped spray from his glasses. A quiet splash sounded farther out, so he looked up. A sleek dolphin surfaced, rolled once, and glided toward deeper blue. He let the loose rope drop into the water and faced the open sea. A silver dolphin curved through the morning glare beyond the posts.
