An orange beacon on a distant radio tower blinked through the afternoon haze. Tara quickened her stride along the mountain trail; the tower marked the small lookout hut she wanted to reach before the ridge erased the sun.

Granite fragments rolled under her boots, and the path grew steep where winter rain had washed away soil. A fallen pine blocked the route, its trunk thick as a doorway. Behind her, the shadow of the ridge stretched farther across the slope, covering stones that still glimmered minutes earlier. Wind carried resin and cold earth together; both scents clung to her breath. Tara checked the buckles on her safety gear, then studied two openings. She could crawl under the pine—slow but firm ground waited beyond—or swing around a narrow ledge that skipped the obstacle yet hung over loose gravel. She guided her steps in a mindful rhythm and chose the ledge.

The ridge shadow climbed again, darkening half the ledge before she reached the center. Pebbles slipped under one boot, and her metal water bottle knocked free, pinging down the drop. The shortcut cost her that bottle, but the ledge saved time. Near the far end, a crack in the rock opened like a page. Inside, vibrant purple flowers spread across damp moss, hidden from the main path. Their color flashed against grey stone, a surprise stitched into the race. Tara stopped chasing the beacon. She lowered her pack beside the crack and traced the wide velvet petals. A lone beetle shimmered beneath the bloom’s arch.

山脊的陰影再次上爬，在她抵達中央前已將半條岩緣變暗。碎石在一支靴底下滑動，她的金屬水壺被撞掉，叮噹滾下斜坡。這條捷徑讓她失去了水壺，卻爭取了時間。接近盡頭時，岩石裂縫像書頁般張開。裡面潮濕的苔蘚上鋪滿鮮豔的紫花，遠離主路而隱密。那色彩在灰岩上閃亮，像縫在競賽中的驚喜。塔拉停止追逐訊號燈。她把背包放在裂縫旁，指尖輕觸寬闊柔軟的花瓣。花朵陰影下，一隻甲蟲的殼面閃著光。
