Water tapped against a hollow log beside the stream. The soft rhythm drew a young raccoon to the edge of the clay bank. Cool air brushed the damp stones, and a sandy scent rose from them. He lifted a round pebble, rolled it between his paws, and placed it on a wide leaf floating near the shore. The leaf dipped, steadied, and moved slowly with the current. A faint splash followed as the pebble slipped overboard and vanished. The raccoon blinked, then chose another object: a curled seed pod with an unusual spiral. He pressed it onto a second leaf at a slightly different angle. This time the leaf spun, leaving bright ripples that touched the first craft before drifting apart.
Wind shifted, pushing both leaves toward a cluster of reeds. The raccoon stepped downstream, scooped a thin twig, and set it as a mast on a third leaf. Laughter drifted from distant campers across the meadow, mixing with the water’s murmur. As the new vessel glided forward, an abrupt trill burst from overhead; a nightingale landed on a branch and began singing without pause. The sudden notes shook loose a shower of tiny petals that fluttered onto the stream. One petal clung to the twig mast, tilting the third leaf enough to brush the first two. All three craft bumped, rearranged, and formed a quiet triangle that moved as one patch through the sunlit water. The raccoon watched, ears tilted, while the triangle slid beyond the reeds. A dragonfly skimmed low above the moving shapes. Three leaves drifted in a slow circle near the bank.
Translation
