A soft twang rose from the stretched cord fixed between two pegs on the workbench. Thea pulled the cord again; it sang and bounced while she compared its line with a pencil mark. She kept the canvas sheet flat by adding a small clamp to spread the tension. Beside the glue pot, a folded questionnaire waited. The local journalist planned to fill it after checking the finished frame. On the high shelf, a tabby cat pawed an abandoned rubber band. The band flexed, sagged, and then sprung back against a box of bolts. A gentle warmth from a desk lamp met the mild scent of fresh glue in the air. The cat watched as the box rocked, yet the creature remained silent. In another corner, Rafe noted numbers with a ruler. He prepared for a brief discussion about which dowel would fit.
After several tugs, the rubber band finally snapped. Its rebound knocked the box over, and wood shavings scattered like light flakes. One shaving slid under the questionnaire and lifted an edge. Air from the fall puffed beneath the paper, and the sheet glided across the bench. It struck the taut cord Thea held, forcing the cord to sag; the canvas wrinkled at once. Thea jerked her wrist, and the cord sprang free, landing against the cat's whiskers. The cat's ears flattened, and it leapt onto the canvas, adding a fresh compression that warped the frame. Rafe lunged forward, slid a long nut and bolt through the corner, and the structure stiffened again. The questionnaire stopped near the windowsill, its blank answers still empty, waiting for whichever reporter arrived first. Evening air drifted through the open window and cooled the glue along the joints. A long shadow slid across the overturned ruler.
