A low hum rolled under the pier beams. The wooden cleat beside the water creaked once, answering the sound. On the sun-warmed plank lay an iguana, its legs stretched wide, the radiant heat of midday rising from the timber.

Reflections trembled across the harbor surface while salty mist brushed the reptile’s scales and copper light touched each hull. Above, a labyrinth of ropes, nets, and signal lines hung between masts and pulleys. Then the noon ferry released a deep whistle. The blast sent a sharp vibration through every metal part; the nearest anchor chain rattled, and that rattle shook a barrel standing against it. The barrel gave a dull ring, its lid jolting up just enough to jostle a folded tarpaulin. The loose cloth slid, slapped the plank, and kept flapping. Startled by the sudden flutter, the iguana lifted its belly, angled one clawed foot, and eased beneath a bollard’s shadow. The chain still quivered, and the tarpaulin’s rhythm carried on with the breeze.

The ferry moved away, yet small echoes stayed trapped among the pylons. Nets swayed, and each mast offered its own reply: a higher creak here, a muffled thud there. No one hurried to stop the movement. Water lapped, gulls wheeled, and the barrel rocked in a slow counterbeat. The iguana’s throat pulsed once, then its body relaxed flat again, skin matching the weathered board. The tarpaulin kept drumming against the wood. Nearby, a buoy rang every time a passing wave nudged its side.

渡輪駛遠，但細小回聲仍困在樁柱之間。漁網搖晃，每根桅杆都發出自己的回應：這裡是較高的吱呀，那邊是悶悶的砰響。沒有人急著停止這些動作。水聲拍擊，海鷗盤旋，桶以緩慢的節拍搖擺。鬣蜥的喉嚨鼓動一下，隨後又伏平，膚色與風化的木板融為一體。防水布繼續在木面上鼓動，而近旁浮標在微浪推撞下仍不斷響鈴。
