"Careful with the dish."
Quinn lowered a round tin plate onto the cedar bench, the metal ringing once against the smooth surface. A terrier beside him shuffled through curled shavings; each paw-step gave a dry crackle that overlapped the fading ring. From the hallway drifted faint spoon clinks and kettle puffs, leftovers of an abundant breakfast now cooling unseen. On a stool rested a folded, sawdust-speckled cloth, next to a delicious rosemary appetizer forgotten on a wooden tray. Outside, sparrows traded quick tinny bursts while loose boards answered with a hollow boom. Quinn lifted the cloth, thinking it an ordinary tablecloth spread earlier to guard fresh varnish. Wood-framed rings hidden inside bumped together, producing a muffled thud that rolled under the bench.
He shook the fabric once; a rising flutter echoed through the rafters like distant chimes. The weighted edge yanked sideways, slipped from his grip, and the plate clattered again, sharper this time. Ivy steadied the tin, fingers drumming along its rim while Quinn flipped the cloth to catch better light. The underside showed tight carved spirals; when his thumb traced them, the bench hummed, deep and hollow. Thin seams had been stitched across the hem to hold the rings in place. Not a tablecloth at all—the fabric concealed a circular shaker, once part of a parade drum that had launched a lavish spread of festival music. Quinn paused, then balanced the shaker on the plate and walked a single step; rings inside whispered, terrier nails tapped, ceiling beams answered with a faint groan. The plate that had rung plainly minutes earlier now offered a layered hush-and-ring duet, so Quinn slid the tin dish back onto the cedar bench, its etched spirals catching late-morning light.
Translation
