A low whistle slipped through the partly open kitchen window, rattling the ladle on its hook. Kira set a mixing bowl under the light. She tapped flour into it, each tap raising a small puff. Blake lined thin paper balloons from their weekend science project along the counter. He checked how much each would inflate. Warm nutmeg scent drifted among hanging copper pans, and faint light picked out their dull scratches. They planned to create crisp pastry shells before mealtime with their family.

The whistle grew into a sudden gust that pushed steam from the soup pot across the room. The blast caught the paper balloons first. They fluttered off the counter and bounced against Kira's elbow. A cloud of flour billowed toward the ceiling. It drifted back like pale snow onto the open batter. Kira grabbed the wicker bread basket that sat beside the toaster. She held it between the bowl and the window. Blake slid a chopping board behind the basket to support the shield. Together they continued whisking, their arms moving inside the small calm pocket they had formed.

The basket strained against each new push of air. Its woven straws creaked and shed thin fibers. Flour dust stuck to the damp board, and steam beads gathered until the wood began to bow. A sudden draft slipped under the bending board and lifted one corner. A spoon tipped onto the tiles. Soup splashed, yet the batter stayed safe. The two kept whisking until the mixture grew silky. Straw pieces drifted across the air like tiny sails. Loose fibers twirled up and rode the restless draft toward the ceiling. Steam swept after them, curling through the gap and rolling deeper into the house.

籃子抵住每一次新的氣壓推擠，編織的藤條吱嘎作響，不斷掉落細纖維。麵粉黏在潮濕的切菜板上，蒸氣凝成水珠，使木板逐漸彎曲。一股突如其來的氣流溜進彎板下方，掀起一角，勺子於是掉到磁磚上。湯水濺開，但麵糊依然完好。兩人持續攪拌，直到麵糊變得柔滑。藤條碎片像小帆般在空中飄移。鬆散的纖維旋起，沿著不斷翻滾的氣流衝向天花板。蒸氣隨後追逐它們，穿過縫隙向屋內更深處翻捲而去。
