Sharp glare flickered off a rotating vent cap beside the stairwell door. Sage squinted and stepped onto the flat roof, carrying a coiled green cargo cord. He pictured a small innovation for the school garden below. His strategy was simple: lift a herb planter up here where sun stayed longer. He threaded the cord through a metal pulley fixed to the railing. Then he pulled until the line grew painfully taut. Across the roof, Kane rolled worn foam mats into tight cylinders. He looped a thick red exercise band around each one and let them stand upright. Rubber gave off a faint sweet smell, and every stretch answered with a low humming twang.

When Sage added the planter's weight, the green cord stretched farther than expected. He leaned his back farther for extra pulling force. The cord slipped from his damp glove and rebounded across the roof like a snapping snake. It struck the nearest standing mat with a dull thump. The shock made Kane's red band shoot free, slapping the air as it flew. On its wild path, the band clipped a silver whistle hanging from Kane’s belt. The metal piece swung out and released a sharp note over the rooftops. The band continued and knocked Sage’s flashlight off a paint can. The rolling light clattered into the green cord near the pulley, tugging the planter sideways. Wet soil spilled, raising a cool brown mist that drifted toward their shoes. Sage dropped to one knee and caught the loose cord. He wrapped it around the railing twice and tightened a fresh knot with both fists. Kane trapped the springy band between his elbows. He twisted the mat until the layers pressed together again. A bright green knot from Sage crossed a red loop from Kane on the same bar. Water kept dripping from the tilted planter, tapping the metal below.
