She crossed the cat-walk toward Dale, who balanced a wooden framework over a settling tank. The plank under his boot gave a tired creak, and the harmonics of the room shifted, as though the mill itself tried a new chord. Dale angled the frame, hoping the sheet beneath would keep its pristine quality; the drip, however, chose to meander along the beam and land squarely on the fresh pulp. Dale winced; an uneven buzz spread through the loft, vibrating the drying lines so the hanging sheets trembled. Halfway to the lever that would heighten the ceiling fan, Opal stopped, palm hovering. The air spoke of more tension than airflow could mend. She stepped back, studying the original crescent on the boards; its edges had already dried. A small pool still formed beneath the pail, though the pulp in the frame below calmed. Their earlier foresight—keeping spare moulds stacked nearby—now mattered more than fan speed. Opal lifted a clean screen, slid it under the framework, and let the thicker mix pour onto it while Dale tightened the wedge again, restoring the beater’s former tempo. The whistle faded, sheets above grew still, and rhythmic thuds reclaimed the room. Finally, Opal knelt where the first damp crescent had warned her, wiped the dry stain with the heel of her hand, then pressed a new crescent of damp pulp onto the waiting mesh.
