Every morning, Rafe skimmed leaves from the stone irrigation channel, the work as steady as the current itself. This time a grey heron stood ankle-deep in the shallows instead of lifting off, and its glassy eyes tracked him without alarm. The bird’s calm presence struck him; not once had it lingered during his rounds. A faint note of sweet rot drifted past, quite unlike the usual brine and iron that clung to dawn water. He stopped mid-stroke, rake poised above the surface. Not only the smell had changed; eddies gathered around something dark wedged under the wooden gate, and water pressed through the narrower gap in a lower, throatier murmur.
Years of silt had stained the gate, and each board carried its own history of odors: char from last winter’s brush burn, resin from pine poles once laid beside it, even a bloom of algae whose bitter tang marked early spring. Today another layer joined the catalogue, apprehensive in its sour-sweet uncertainty, as though the water itself questioned the newcomer. His walk along the channel often felt like a quiet odyssey, a slow collecting of scents rather than miles, yet nothing in that long catalogue matched this one. Around him, reeds shook loose a dusting of dried pollen, and the breeze pulled the fragrance downstream where unseen roots drank the altered flow.
Not until the rake snagged on fibre did he kneel. Beneath the gate, a burlap bundle bulged, swollen with water and heavier than its size suggested. His fingers still dripping, he worked one knot free; only after the cloth slackened did the current release a sigh. Out rolled a small wooden box, its lid inlaid with a pattern of barley heads, a reminder of the fields that relied on this channel’s bounty. At first glance he guessed a lost lunch or tool case, yet grain dust, not food, escaped when he lifted it. The box appeared ordinary, but its presence here tightened the flow and dimmed the gate’s sound—a misplaced thing altering everything around it.
He set the box on the sun-warmed stone and wiped algae from its clasp. Only after a beat of doubt did he press a thumb against the warped hinge. Inside lay no tools, only pale kernels—barley transformed to husks after a long soak—and, beneath them, a folded paper map now reduced to fibrous mush. What he had imagined a treasure for someone’s quest dissolved between his fingertips, the contents already claimed by water. Yet the lid, rocked open, released a lofting scent of earth after rain, pleasant and vast, as if fields many turns away had sent back a breath. Rafe closed the empty box, threads of husk sticking to his palm, and slid the damp wood into his satchel.
Translation
