A low, rhythmic gurgle echoed through the narrow stone channel, threading around a clay valve mottled with lime. The valve sat half-seated in its groove, hairline cracks tracing its surface like pale rivers. Joy crouched beside it; water lapped against her boots, and cool mist beaded on her knuckles. What caught her ear first was the uneven drip beyond the adjoining gate, a faint metallic ping lost beneath the broader murmur. Not once did she look up from the channel wall; instead, she pressed a palm against the valve and felt it quiver. If the stones were any looser, the entire lip might crumble, releasing an abrupt rush downstream.
Pebbles trembled whenever the ping sounded, yet the source stayed hidden. Her sleeves already damp, she slid her hand along the rim until fingertips brushed a thin shard wedged between masonry seams. Each new vibration nudged the shard higher, as though the channel itself annotated the passage of time with a private percussion. Joy paused, drawing a slow inspiration; the damp air tasted of moss and silt. A second fragment, smaller but sharper, rattled free and glinted briefly before water carried it away. Persistence belonged not only to water; the tiny movements accumulating beneath its hush repeated, minute after minute, building a pulse she could measure with her fingertips.
She gripped the exposed shard and twisted. The valve shifted a fraction, releasing a short hiss rather than a splash. Within the newly opened slit, something glossy reflected stray light like a trapped insect wing. Joy reached in, then pulled back; the shard had left faint scratches across her thumb, and cold water seeped farther into her sleeves. After a breath, she leaned closer, letting the chill wrap her arms. She turned the object toward daylight, expecting a coin or washer. Instead, a curled sheet of transparent resin unfolded, bearing concentric grooves that resembled the ridges of a seashell. The first revelation lay in that mistake—what she had treated as debris was, in truth, a delicate recorder of sound.
Only after she lifted the resin disc to her ear did the channel’s music shift; echoes from upstream pulsed across the grooves, returning as a softened chorus of its own making. A quiet fascination belonged to the disc itself, each groove capturing droplets, then letting them fall in tiny chiming beads. Genuine lightness defined the material, lighter than water-worn wood, lighter even than leaf-litter skimming the surface. A decision waited: reseat the valve and keep the echo lodged inside, or widen the gap and let the disc leave with the current. Joy braced the valve with one hand and eased the disc beneath the folds of her jacket. Joy tamped the valve stone deeper into the damp groove.
Translation
