Scratchy straw brushed Kira’s palms each time she packed it against the wooden wall. A brown goat waited behind her, hooves ticking on the packed earth. Kira picked up a small tin basin and placed it beneath the trough. The metal surface threw back a pale morning reflection that brightened the dark beams overhead. She reached into her pocket knife pouch and sliced two carrots into thin sticks. The pieces dropped with soft taps into the basin. A sweet smell of apple cake drifted from a cloth wrap on the shelf. Hugo had left the slice there yesterday. Kira hoped to finish chores before the sun climbed higher.

As she turned, a thin shaft of light slipped through a gap in the roof shingles. It struck the shiny basin and bounced across the wall. A bright oval glided over bales of hay. The goat lunged after the wandering glare and knocked the basin sideways. Water spilled, and the reflection danced faster over the floorboards. Kira lunged too, but she paused and simply held her hand above the basin’s rim. Her palm blocked the harsh beam, and the moving oval vanished. She set the basin upright again, listening to the last drops fall. She tried to remember another morning when the light behaved like that. No clear picture arrived, so she shrugged and kept working.

Kira tipped a small scoop of grain beside the carrots. The goat lowered its head, long ears making a soft silhouette against the glitter on the basin. A faint color shift rippled over its glossy coat as stray beams threaded through moving rafters. Kira wiped her wet fingers on her trousers and picked up the cloth wrap with the cake. She decided to save the treat for later and placed it on a higher shelf where light could not tempt the goat again. A heavy cloud drifted in from the pasture and dimmed the roof gap. Shadow crawled over the boards, smudging every patch of glare as the stable air kept stirring.

琪拉把一小瓢飼料倒在紅蘿蔔旁。山羊低下頭，長耳朵在閃亮盆面上形成柔軟剪影。當零碎光束穿過晃動的椽木，它油亮的皮毛上出現輕微色變。琪拉把濕手指在褲子上抹乾，拿起包著蛋糕的布。她決定稍後再享用，便把布包放到較高的架子上，讓光線無法再誘惑山羊。一大片烏雲從牧場飄來，遮住屋頂縫隙。陰影爬過木板，把殘餘眩光抹去，馬廄中的空氣仍持續翻動。
