A narrow beam from the desk lamp struck the brass tuning fork. Zane leaned over the recorder, arranging jars before starting his morning experience with coastal sounds. Dry salt smell mixed with the faint warmth of the lamp against his cheek. The first track carried a rising tide from a sheltered lagoon, its roll echoing like soft drums against shells. Clicks from a playful dolphin broke through, joined by faint insects from a forest patch. Before he could note the exact pitch, a deep hum spread from the ceiling vent. Metal shelves answered the hum; loose lids rattled, and glass tubes trembled in uneven resonance. Even the tuning fork buzzed without touch, caught by invisible waves bouncing around the room. He pressed both palms over the headphones, yet the jumble only thickened.

His eyes searched the table and landed on a square pad of cork used for specimen stands. He wedged the pad between the vent grill and the nearest metal bar, hoping to muffle the vibration. The hum dropped, and the click pattern from the dolphin returned with clearer ring. Zane bent closer, timing each burst with a pencil tap on paper. After only a minute, tiny crumbs shook loose from the cork. They drifted onto a dish of dried leaves collected from the forest sample tray. The crumbs landed like rain, adding a sharp crackle that masked the next delicate sequence. He sighed, let the recorder run, and brushed fragments aside with the back of his hand. The last small crumb finally slid off the dish. Zane turned toward the window when a truck horn rolled through the pane.
