Fresh paint left a sharp smell along the pedestrian bridge. Delia lifted a thin exercise band and looped it around two steel posts. The band stretched between the posts like a bright ribbon. It was ready to display the pressed leaves inside her journal. Atlas slipped a maple leaf behind the band; its edges flicked against the rubber and bounced gently. Below them, river water murmured over hidden rocks. Cool shade met warm sunlight across the planks, and faint echoes from distant traffic shimmered under the arch. Beyond the farther bank, a broad plateau rose, broken by an escarpment striped with pale rock. Small cactus clusters dotted the flat top, each arm holding a stubborn thorn against the sky. Sunlight glimmered on the bridge rails, and the rubber band hummed under steady tension.

A passing truck rumbled under the span and the vibration flexed the band. Heat had softened the rubber, so the sudden shake made it sag. The maple leaf slid downward, pulling two more leaves with it; their weight compressed the band further. Tension rebounded to the side post, where the knot slipped and whipped back, snapping air against Delia’s elbow. She pivoted one foot and pressed her shoulder into the mid-section of the band. The contact steadied it without grabbing anything new. The band continued to droop, yet the leaves now clung higher than the walkway. Wind pushed them sideways, rustling paper edges in uneven rhythm. Before leaving, Atlas nudged the maple leaf beside a darker reed sketch that Delia had drawn. Both pieces clung together under the slack band while their corners fluttered toward the river’s moving surface.
