Story Content
English Original
A single bulb above the loading dock buzzed and cast a narrow cone across stacked cartons. Under that bright circle, a young raccoon nosed a dented tin lid scented faintly with grain. A faint smell of pepper mixed with cold air, and dust motes drifted through the cone of light. Each push made the lid scrape and drag, leaving pale curves in the dusty concrete. Cardboard edges brushed his sides while he squeezed between towers of boxes toward the corridor. A silver banner, crinkled from an old anniversary party, drooped from an upper shelf above him. The lid jammed against rough floor, so he paused, leaning back to tackle the stubborn rim. After a brief struggle, deep growls vibrated in his chest and the metal shifted a finger's width.
In a darker aisle, a green cricket explored a wooden broom resting against the wall. Its hind legs rubbed together, producing a dry rasp that slipped under the humming bulb. Water from a cracked pipe had long dripped nearby, and a thin sprout now lifted beside the broom. Freed at last, the raccoon shoved the tin again, and the loosened lid began to slide. Momentum carried it past his paws and toward the open aisle where the cricket had hopped down. Metal kissed chitin; the sudden tap launched the insect upward while the lid spun aside. Startled, the raccoon jerked back, claws scratching fresh lines beside the delicate sprout. The cricket landed on the sagging banner and continued its slow climb beyond torn glitter. Two smudged paw prints curved beside a chain of tiny dotted tracks across the dust. A loosened strip of tinsel swung gently above the crossing marks.
Translation
