A gray cat waited near an old shelf; its tail twitched each time a floorboard groaned. Hazel lifted a delicate glass jar and gave its rim a gentle tap with a wooden knitting needle. The jar rang at a bright pitch, and the sound slid across the slanted ceiling until it reached a brass spoon hanging from a wire. The spoon trembled, knocked against a tin lid, and the lid rattled onto a stack of shallow boxes. A patch of gossamer web between the rafters quivered, scattering powdery dust over the cat’s back.

Curious, Hazel rearranged the objects. She placed a wide terra cotta pot beneath the spoon, then noticed a dried azalea blossom curled inside the pot’s corner. Faded petals clung to the clay as if glued by time. Near the pot rested a toy drum; a naive yellow sun had been painted on its skin years earlier, and the paint now flaked around the edges.
