Nina swung a damp sheet over the thick cotton line, water dripping onto the tiled floor. She spent every Wednesday afternoon in the warm laundry room, completing community service for the small town clinic. Two wide machines rattled beside her; the equipment vibrated gently against the wall while fresh loads turned inside. Steam floated near the ceiling, and the faint scent of lemon soap mixed with warm air. A pale oval impression stayed on her forearm. The heavy bucket handle had pressed there during the last trip from the rinse sink.

She reached for a thick quilt, darker from years of use, and spread its weight along the line. The new mass made the wooden beam bow; pegs at the center began to tilt outward. At the same moment, a plastic basket on the shelf above wobbled. A gentle tremor from the machines nudged its base. She slid two steps sideways, braced the basket with her elbow, and gripped the quilt’s hem. By shifting the fabric farther toward the nearest hook, she moved the center of balance. The line rose a finger’s width, and the basket leaned back into place. A quiet test beep sounded from the smoke detector overhead.

Nina tucked one more towel onto the steadier section of the line. She wiped her damp palms on her apron. The routine carried on; water still dripped, and the equipment kept its slow, even rhythm behind her. She hoped to finish before dusk, yet nothing hurried her steps. A speckled moth drifted through the open doorway, brushed a hanging sleeve, and fluttered toward the ceiling lamps. Its patterned wings flickered once against the cloth before it disappeared into the steamy shadows above.
