Blue neon from the window sign splashed over the polished mixing bowl beside Dawn. She slid a cooling tray nearer the light, inspecting each loaf for an even crust. Steam from the brick oven rose and bent the neon, turning the reflection into wavering bands. Flour dust lingered in the warm air, catching stray glints. Across the floor, the bakery cat watched the shifting colors without moving a whisker.

A sudden flare sprang when the beam passed through a glass jar of sugar crystals. The crystals split the light, sending a rainbow band straight onto Dawn’s eyes. She blinked and tried to score a neat ridge along a fresh loaf. The glare misled her blade; the cut curved sideways. The curved slice opened a soft dell in the dough. It looked like a tiny hollow under loose flour. Heat escaped through the gap and shimmered upward, warping the rainbow onto the cat’s face. Startled, the cat sprang back and tugged the cord of the overhead lamp with its tail.

The lamp swung, and metal shades threw rolling shadows across the room. One shadow crossed the cooling buns, revealing a darker fossil mark where seeds had burned together. The mark resembled a butterfly pressed inside stone, unexpected and strangely clear. Dawn paused, tracing the pattern with her knife tip while the lamp continued its slow arc. Steam thickened near the brick mouth and swallowed the rainbow. Dull neon alone pulsed against the ceiling. Heat waves fluttered above the trays, and uneven shadows kept sliding over the waiting dough.

青いネオンが窓の看板から伸び、磨かれたミキシングボウルを濡らした。ドーンは冷ましたばかりのトレーを光の近くへ滑らせ、焼き色を確かめた。煉瓦のオーブンから上がる蒸気がネオンを曲げ、揺れる帯のような反射をつくった。温かな空気に小麦粉の粉が漂い、散った光を受けてきらめいた。床の向こうではベーカリーの猫が動かぬひげで色の変化を見守った。

ビームが砂糖の結晶入りガラスびんを通過した瞬間、鋭い閃光が跳ねた。結晶が光を割り、虹色の帯がドーンの目を直撃した。彼女はまばたきし、新しいローフにきれいな稜線を刻もうとした。だがまぶしさで刃がそれ、切れ目は横へ曲がった。曲がった切り込みは生地の中央に柔らかな窪みを開いた。それは粉の下に隠れた小さな谷のようだった。隙間から漏れた熱が上へ揺らぎ、虹を猫の顔へゆがめた。驚いた猫は跳ね退き、尾で天井ランプのコードを引っ張った。

ランプが揺れ、金属のシェードが部屋じゅうに転がる影を投げた。ひとつの影が冷めたパンを横切り、種子が焦げてできた濃い化石模様を露わにした。その模様は石に押し込まれた蝶のようで、不意にくっきり浮かんだ。ドーンはゆっくり刃先で形をなぞり、ランプは弧を描き続けた。蒸気が煉瓦の口元で厚くなり、虹を飲み込んだ。鈍いネオンだけが天井で脈打った。トレーの上では熱の揺らぎが続き、いびつな影が待機中の生地を滑り渡った。
