Dry straw scratched against Cole's fingertips as he pushed open the henhouse gate. Warm grainy air brushed his cheeks while brown feathers rustled overhead. On the floor lay a shallow wooden ramp once used for feed trays. A pair of long iron tongs leaned against it, cool to the touch. Cole lifted them and plucked a round oak acorn from a cracked tin cup nearby. Without thinking further, he let the acorn drop onto the slanted plank. It rolled, gathered speed, bounced off a knot, and disappeared under loose straw. For a moment he caught a glimpse of its shiny side before straw covered it. A soft cluck followed the little chase from somewhere behind the nesting boxes.

He tried again with a slight lift of his heel on the ramp. This time he propped a boot under the ramp, raising the slope a finger’s width. The second acorn sped down, slid across the straw, and knocked a feather into the air. Curious about size, he switched to a smooth hazel nut from the same cup. The nut was lighter, so it spun in a wider arc. It traced a pale groove before stopping near the water trough. Cole enjoyed the shifting paths, so he repeated the drop several more times. He sometimes tilted the ramp harder and sometimes released the nut from higher along tongs. Each run etched a new curved mark across the floor.

Soft footsteps padded through straw behind him, stirring a faint cloud. Wren stepped inside, holding a rustic wooden bead found in the yard. Without a word, she placed the bead in the tongs and nodded toward the ramp. Cole adjusted his grip and tilted the plank a little higher again. The bead struck an acorn halfway down, jumped sideways, and rolled beneath a perch bar. Both children laughed at the sharp turn made by the bead. They added another bead and nut, sending them after the first until colourful specks dotted the straw. Thin marks in the straw showed every roll they made. Cole's hazel nut and Wren's wooden bead stopped side by side. A hen flapped onto the perch above, loosening a spray of dust over the crooked trail.

コールはもう一度試し、かかとで坂を少し持ち上げた。こんどはブーツを坂の下に当て、傾きを指一本分ほど増やした。二つ目のドングリはわらの上を滑り、羽を一枚跳ね上げて止まった。大きさが違うとどうなるか知りたくなり、彼は同じカップから滑らかなハシバミの実を選んだ。その実は軽く、広い弧を描いて転がったあと、水皿のそばで止まった。道筋の変化が面白く、コールは何度も落とした。ときどき坂を強く傾け、ときどき高い位置から実を放し、床には新しい曲線が刻まれていった。

かすかな足音がわらを揺らし、小さなほこりが舞った。ウレンが庭で拾った素朴な木製ビーズを持って入ってきた。彼女はことばを交わさず、それをトングに載せて坂を示した。コールは握り直し、坂をもう少し高くした。ビーズは途中のドングリに当たり、横に跳ねて止まり木の下へ転がった。鋭いカーブに二人は声を上げて笑い、さらにビーズと実を落としていくうちに、色とりどりの点がわらを飾った。細い跡がわらに残り、転がりのすべてを物語っていた。コールのハシバミの実とウレンの木製ビーズが並んで止まる。頭上の止まり木に雌鶏が羽ばたき、小道の上へほこりをぱらりと散らした。
