Metal wheels screeched against distant track joints. On the quiet side platform, a small tabby kitten crouched behind a travel trunk. The floor trembled under each passing carriage, and a loose plank of lumber leaned against the trunk like an uncertain mast. A glazed model lighthouse, a curiosity from some seaside stall, perched on the plank’s upper end. A tendril of ivy dangled from the station’s brick wall, brushing the plank whenever the wind passed through the archway. Thin sunlight slipped between iron pillars, meeting cooler air that shimmered above the concrete. A slight suspicion of oil darkened the wood where passengers had rested their boots, making its surface shine.

With ears pricked, the kitten stretched a paw toward the lumber. The light touch shifted the plank; it tilted, and the miniature lighthouse wobbled like a loose pendulum. As the weight rolled forward, the plank slid a finger’s width down the trunk and struck the platform edge. The jolt lifted the lighthouse clear of its perch. It toppled, landed on its base, and began to spin. The whirling toy knocked against the ivy tendril, shaking free a dry leaf that fluttered onto the kitten’s nose. The animal sneezed, jerking backward and resetting the balance only for a moment.

A grey pigeon, startled by the sneeze, hopped from the roof beam and dropped beside the kitten. Its landing rocked the plank again; the renewed tilt sent the spinning lighthouse sliding toward the pigeon’s pink toes. Wings flapped, adding a fresh force that raised the plank’s upper tip. The lighthouse reversed direction, rolled over the kitten’s tail, and bumped an empty paper cup. The cup tipped, rolled downhill along the platform grooves, and came to rest against the trunk, wedging the plank at a sharper angle. The kitten pressed one forepaw on the cup while the pigeon pecked its rim, locking the impromptu wedge in place. One dusty paw mark now touched a single grey feather beneath the slanted lumber. A departing bus rumbled past the platform, vibrating the cup and sprinkling fresh grit across their shared badge.
