English Original
A low hum traveled through the cellar door. Miles stood on the last stone step and listened while cool air drifted around his knees. The limestone walls caught the sound and bounced a soft echo along the corridor, yet his routine called him forward. He reached a narrow table where dusty glass jars waited for polishing. A shallow willow basket lay beside them, its rim wrapped with a silky ribbon he once used to tag finished pieces. Farther along, sand from a repair job had gathered into a tiny dune against the wall. He wiped one jar with a cloth, turned it to the light of a single lamp, and heard the faint ring of glass against his palm. The lamp’s yellow glow met the damp smell of earth, forming a still pocket around his hands.
Rumbling deepened; somewhere above, heavy machines worked in the distant quarry. The vibration crept down the stairs, made the ceiling creak, and coaxed a new metallic whine from the hanging chains. Every jar trembled. Miles braced his elbow on the table, angled the cloth, and continued wiping, but the next pulse sharpened the pitch until one jar slid toward the edge. He shifted two fingers, tilted the base, and the ring broke into a muffled thud. The dune of sand shivered, spilling a narrow line across the floor. He paused, pressed one foot over the sand strip to stop it, then placed the polished jar inside the willow basket. Another distant blast echoed, softer this time, and the chains grew still. The floor stopped trembling, yet a faint ring still hovered among the bottles. Dust drifted back onto the silent shelves.
Translation
