The washing machine growled behind the half-open door, yet the glass window showed only swirling water — who had set it running? Reed edged into the shared laundry room, the slap of his sandals echoing between metal pipes. He had planned to silence the spicy scent clinging to a tablecloth that once hung inside his grandmother’s pantry. The cloth lay in his basket, a small crimson brooch still pinned to one corner so it would not be lost. A hollow thump rolled from the drum, followed by a whistle like wind inside a bottle. No clothing passed the glass, only foam and a silver flicker.
When the cycle finally droned to a stop, Reed knelt. The latch was stiff; a low scrape answered his tug, and damp air puffed against his cheeks. Inside, the machine was empty except for a keepsake photo stuck to the rim, its paper edges bent by water. The picture showed nothing more than driveway gravel shining after rain, but someone must have cared enough to wash it. Reed placed the soggy print on a shelf, unclipped the brooch, and slid both into his pocket. He packed his own load, yet the faucet hissed twice and went mute; water pressure faltered again. He shifted his weight, pressed a knee against the washer door, and coaxed the basket higher so the inlet valve rested lower. Thin streams answered with a steady patter, and the drum began its low rumble.
Reed waited while distant radios thudded through walls and a stray drip marked seconds on the tiled floor. Spin finally tapered to a faint hum, and he lifted the damp tablecloth toward the stairwell. On the balcony above, hinges squeaked as an older woman leaned over the rail. She patted her coat, hearing only the rattle of keys, then stared at the quiet machine below.
