Viola swung her backpack onto the chrome rack as the train doors slid together. Overhead panels threw a hard glare along the carriage, while each passing pillar stole the light and left the aisle in brief pools of darkness. Amos squeezed beside her, steadying a wooden tool box. Inside, a metal chisel and a slim spatula rattled from the earlier sculpting lesson. Two peaches had started to ripen in the warm air, lying on clay blocks that filled the box’s lower half. A broadcast voice echoed down the carriage, naming the next station in three minutes; missing it meant a long wait, so they stayed close to the door.

A sudden sway pushed Viola’s bottle against the lid of the box. The cap shifted; a narrow ribbon of water slid across the floor, flashing under every ceiling lamp before hiding in the thin shade beneath the seats. The stream reached a tiny clay hare Amos had modeled for practice. The figure rocked once, then darted along the bright aisle. On its way, it nudged the plastic pocket translator left on a suitcase edge. The device jerked forward, dropped into the spreading water, and its small diodes flickered once before darkness claimed them.

Amos dropped to one knee ahead of the water’s advance toward the door sensors. He slid the flexible spatula under the leaning bottle, lifting the mouth clear of the floor so the leak gathered into slow droplets. With his free hand he used the flat side of the chisel to guide the translator onto a folded newspaper, away from the glare. Viola tore the fruit bag open and wrapped the damp hare in peach skin, drawing most of the trail into the pulp. The train began to slow, lamps over the exit flaring brighter as power shifted, and under the seats a faint drip kept tapping against metal.

水勢接近門側感應器前，阿莫斯單膝跪下。他把柔軟抹刀塞進傾斜水瓶下方，抬高瓶口，使洩水只剩緩慢水珠。同時用鑿刀平面把翻譯器推到折疊報紙上，遠離刺光。維奧拉撕開水果袋，把濕野兔包進桃皮，讓果肉吸走大部分水痕。列車開始減速，出口上方燈具因電流變換更亮，而在座椅下方，輕微滴水聲仍敲打金屬。
