Kent swung his bulging laundry bag around the corner, and humid air rich with steamy detergent brushed his face. His sneaker grazed a dark, syrup-smelling print on the stairwell tile, as though something damp and sugary had pressed there and then wandered off.

Nora emerged from the corridor with a wicker basket that gave off a warm starch scent. Together they followed the faint trail—each mark carried a different note: old caramel, watered-down coffee, faint pepper. The track ended inside the shared laundry room, where the single machine rumbled and released puffs of citrus-bleach vapor.
