English Original

Someone had propped a narrow stainless satchel against the reception desk, and a lemon-disinfectant tang drifted from its seams. Antiseptic air rolled from ceiling vents, mixing with traces of stale coffee and the chalky scent left by foot-worn linoleum. Number cards blinked above the counter, yet no one moved; the fumes of rubbing alcohol seemed to glue feet to the glossy floor.

Atlas shifted his shoes on the speckled tiles while the loudspeaker jumped from eighty-two to eighty-six, then back to seventy-nine. A syrupy cough-drop aroma floated out of a neighbouring pocket, masking the metallic tang from a dropped coin. When the queue bunched sideways, the satchel slid and its zipper cracked open. A warm yeasty smell—like bread dough left too long near a heater—leaked out. Atlas knelt, thumb brushing powdery specks on the clasp. The smell puzzled him; medical bags rarely carried such bakery notes.

His number still flickered unseen, so he unfastened the lid. Inside lay neat rolls of silicone kitchenware. Spatulas with mint-green heads pressed against wooden spoons that carried a smoky cedar whiff. A pair of tiny whisks, tips hooked as if ready to whisk together butter and honey, rattled softly. He lifted one; a fine dust of flour clung to its coil, sweet on the back of his tongue when the air reached him. Beneath the tools, colour-blocked handles seemed to mix and match without pattern, some bearing a faint vinegar hint from new plastic, others a buttery smell from earlier trials. Atlas glanced at the counter—numbers still danced out of order—then chose a clear patch beside a magazine stack. He tucked the culinary bundle there, zipper two-thirds closed, and folded the tagless strap under the satchel.

Translation
