A thin stream of passengers had already climbed the steps to the upper deck when Joy reached the city bus platform with a squat wooden barrel braced against her hip. The uneven staves rubbed her jacket, and every ridge pressed grainy dust into the fabric. Warm, sugary air leaked from inside, where maple candies knocked like marbles each time she shifted weight. She headed toward the rear door, but a glossy red quadrant of freshly washed tiles slowed her stride; detergent film left the surface as slick as soap. Rubber soles skidded, the barrel tilted, and her elbow struck a metal pole. At the same moment, a pigeon stalking crumbs under the bench hopped across her boots, claws scraping the damp floor.

Joy steadied herself and stepped onto the bus. Engine vibration shivered through cold handrails and along the ridged rubber aisle. She pushed the barrel onto an overhead rack whose brushed steel looked smooth yet offered little grip; its rounded body rocked, then rolled forward. The movement nudged her lunch pouch, flipping a pair of stainless tongs over the edge. They clanged along the aisle, the sharp ring bouncing from seat backs. The sudden sound startled the same pigeon, now perched on the step while doors still held open for late passengers. Wings thrashed against ceiling panels, a soft storm of feathers brushing coats. In the flurry, one wing brushed the door sensor, and the panels slid wider.

The new gap pulled a gust through the cabin that jarred the rack again. The barrel bumped free, dropped, and spun across the threshold. Pigeon and barrel tumbled together onto the platform; copper hoops caught the light, lending an accidental aesthetic sparkle as wood rattled over tiles. Maple sweets spilled and skittered toward the track, smaller and slower with each bounce. A station cleaner kneeling nearby dragged a sand-filled bucket sideways, creating a low ridge that halted the runaway candies. Joy jumped down, palms slapping gritty floor, and gathered what she could. She crouched closer, arm reaching toward the still-spinning barrel while loose feathers drifted past her shoes.

新的空隙帶進一股風，行李架再度被搖動。木桶鬆脫、墜落，旋轉著越過門檻。鴿子跟著木桶一起滾到月台，銅箍映光，無心地閃出美感；木桶在磁磚上震顫作響。楓糖糖塊灑出，彈跳著朝軌道滑去，每次彈跳都慢一點、輕一點。附近蹲著的站務清潔員拖來一桶裝沙的水桶，橫向在地面劃出低矮沙牆，把滑動的糖塊攔住。喬伊跳下車，雙掌拍在粗糙地面，撿起能撿的東西。她再度蹲低，伸手朝仍在旋轉的木桶靠近，一片片鬆散羽毛從她鞋尖前飄過。
