Grain kernels pattered against a tin pail beside the stable door. Joy paused there, and the dry rhythm echoed across the packed earth yard. A dull glint flashed from a horseshoe nail; the brief spark skipped away in daylight. Warm air drifted from the cowshed, mixing with the faint smell of hay. Near the water trough, a soft mound of brown clay cracked in the sun. She scooped a thumbful, rolled it between her palms, and formed a small ball. A flat board rested against an overturned milk crate, making a gentle ramp. Without thinking, she set the new sphere at the top and gave it a nudge. It rolled, gathered speed, bumped the dirt, and stopped against her boot. She shifted the board, raised the crate, and tried again from a steeper angle. Each attempt left thin tracks on the wood. She tilted her head, moving with the care of a quiet sculptor.
On the fourth roll, the clay ball veered right. It bounced onto a clump of straw and stayed there. Joy lowered the ramp a finger's width and released a second sphere. This one spun halfway, lost momentum, and slid backwards before dropping off the side. The board creaked, its old integrity unsure after seasons of rain and hooves. She pressed her palm near the middle, testing balance without adding force. A sudden rustle came from the stone wall; a green lizard darted across the ramp. Its tiny claws struck the rolling clay, flipping the piece into the air. The surprised reptile vanished under hay. The ball thudded into the pail and cracked apart. Joy laughed once, then gathered the fragments and pressed them together for another try. The ramp stayed tilted, straw stuck to the wet surface. Nothing rolled true after that. Streaks of soft clay marked the board near her hand. A lone sphere rocked back and forth at the slightest breeze.
Translation
