Every dusk, the hemp insulation packed along the south wall looked the same—grey, matted, and quiet under drifting flour; tonight, a pinpoint of copper glare punctured the weave. Not once did Reed persuade himself that the mill ever changed, yet the tiny glint tugged him closer, wheel-creak and river-rush crowding the air.
Beyond the door, the vast expanse of water fanned out under violet light, each ripple mirroring the wheel’s slow sweep. Hands tucked behind his back, Reed watched spray turn amber where lantern beams crossed it, as though the wheel tested sustainability by giving the river’s strength straight back. Only after the lantern rocked on its hook did he return inside.
Hands dusted with bran, Reed pinched the wool. A bead the size of a lentil rolled free, but clay, not metal, clouded his thumb. If the lantern were brighter, the specks might look like stars; instead, the crumbly sphere broke again, revealing a curled husk of grain sealed within. The wall offered soft resistance—the gap widened only after Reed braced one shoulder—and a cooler thread of air slipped along the beam, reminding him what the batting had guarded.
He paused, bead halves on his palm, wheel thumping beyond the floorboards. A thought flickered: the padding hid seed rather than treasure, the clay kernel waiting for warmth the wall could never supply. Reed carried both fragments to the sluice trough; water eddied, the clay skin dissolving in cloudy ribbons until naked grain spun away toward the river. No word marked its purpose, yet the moment re-cast the wall’s quiet stuffing into a silent storehouse. Reed eased the wool back into the gap and dropped the damp shard beside the axle.
Translation
