Reed pushed a small trolley toward the moving belt. He wanted fresh vegetables for tonight. Boxes slid forward, then paused, then slid again. The belt hummed three seconds, stopped one, and repeated. He counted the rhythm twice before reaching in. A crate jumped forward during each hum, then stayed still.

Workers feed new crates onto the belt during each stop. The shapes vary as they arrive under the white lamps. He aims for a bunch of bright carrots. During the next pause, he grabs the carrots quickly. His arm knocks a box of tomatoes behind the gap. The belt starts again and the loose tomato rolls away. It bumps a switch, and a side gate swings open. Two empty baskets tumble through the opening and clatter down. Reed places the carrots in his trolley and steps back. He plans a crisp salad and watches the gate sway. The belt keeps humming, and a new crate reaches the light.
