Story Content

English Original

Soft afternoon light fell across Viola's small kitchen table.

She placed colorful paper, glue, and string in a neat row.

Her goal was clear: build a chain of paper fish.

Each fish would sway above the window during tonight's meal.

She cut shapes with brisk scissors and pressed edges tight.

A warm draft from the open door made scraps flutter around.

One scrap slid under the stool and caught her eye.

She bent to grasp it, and the stool nudged the table leg.

The glue jar tipped, tapping a spoon that rolled toward the sink.

The chain broke before the glue could dry.

Viola paused, then changed her order of steps.

She fixed string first, then added tails, starting from the far end.

With weight balanced, the fish held straight while the glue set.

As she lifted the finished chain, a tiny seed fell out.

It fell from a paper fish, leaving a faint mint hint.

She taped the chain above the window, and the fish swayed.

A loose spoon rolled once more and stopped near the door.

Translation
