Nina pushed the glass door inward and stepped onto speckled tile, warm air carrying faint detergent into her face. She had folded clothes here every weekend of summer, so her stride traced an invisible route to the last empty washer near the window. Glare from fluorescent panels slanted across stainless drums, turning them into dull mirrors where her outline wavered. She paused to contemplate the glass porthole already fogged by an earlier cycle, steam beading then sliding downward. Nowhere on the humming row could she locate the small chip in the third machine’s knob that once served as her landmark; that absence tingled like a misplaced word.

A slice of sunlight cut through the skylight each time a cloud thinned, and the beam wandered across the floor. Wherever it lingered, droplets on tile began to evaporate, leaving ghostly rings that marked earlier spills. The light skimmed a control panel whose recondite symbols—crescent, spiral, jagged line—had lost color under thousands of wiping palms. An elderly man loaded sheets nearby, counting under his breath; he enunciated each number so carefully that the sibilants threaded through motor noise. As the beam drifted over his hands and moved on, the numbers faded too, the room returning to its layered whirr.

Nina upended her basket and let T-shirts tumble into the drum. With the lid shut, she reached for coins, then paused; both dryers on her usual side flashed red. A mild quandary unfolded between the quarters in her palm and the unfamiliar machines across the aisle. Steam thinning around her face, she shifted the basket, crossed the gap, and tried the first dryer. What stopped her was the faint outline of paint near the ceiling—pale blue shapes she had never noticed. If the spin cycle were any louder, it would drown the street outside, yet the shapes waited above the noise, distinct and unhurried.

She climbed onto a plastic chair, its legs wobbling on tile. As her eyes adjusted, the blue spread into waves, and within them small fish appeared, scratched by time yet still swimming. No sooner had she traced the largest fish than she spotted a washed-out sun, its rays aligning with the afternoon beam. The mural had been here all along, simply higher than anyone looked. Nina slid down, fed the unfamiliar dryer, and lifted her emptied basket. Outside, late light glanced off parked cars, and one glove swung loosely from the basket’s rim while she crossed toward the bus stop.

妮娜把籃子倒進滾筒，Ｔ恤紛紛落下。蓋上門後她伸手掏出硬幣又停住；自己慣用那側的烘衣機全亮著紅燈。掌中的硬幣與走道另一側陌生機器之間浮起一絲兩難。蒸氣在臉旁變薄，她挪著籃子跨過窄道，嘗試第一台烘衣機。她被天花板邊微弱的藍色輪廓吸引——那是從未注意過的圖形。如果脫水聲再大些，外頭街音便會被完全淹沒，而那些圖形仍在噪音上方悠然懸著。

她踩上塑膠椅，椅腳在磁磚上晃動。眼睛適應後，藍色蔓延成波浪，波浪裡出現細微魚群，歲月磨蝕卻仍似遊動。她才掃過最大那條魚，又瞥見褪色的太陽，光束正好與其殘存的光芒對齊。這面壁畫一直存在，只是高到無人抬頭。妮娜跳下椅子，投幣啟動陌生烘衣機，舉起空籃。店外傍晚的光在停車排金屬上閃動，一只手套搖晃著掛在籃邊，隨她走向公車站。
