A slender wooden mould floated skewed upon the vat’s pale pulp, its wire deck trembling each time the distant beater struck the trough wall. Who had abandoned it mid-lift, and why did no one claim it now? Mae stepped closer, the plank floor moaning under damp weight while echoes rolled through the rafters. The mould should have drifted quietly; instead every thud made the tiny frame rasp against the vat lip, sand grains groaning between brass and wood. That coarse scrape pecked at her certainty that the afternoon routine ran smoothly. With sleeves already flecked by fibre, she slid fingers beneath the frame, and assumed it would rise easily.

Nowhere in the pale mixture could she spot the usual swirl indicating proper dilution, and the mould refused to rise. Waterlogged pulp clung to its mesh like porridge to a spoon; the extra mass pulled at her wrists until she set it down again. Fingers still damp, she assembled a fresh deck of drying frames on the bench; their lighter weight offered a silent comparison. Hardly had she placed the second frame before a pipe above released a sharp cloudburst of collected rainwater, drumming on the tin roof, then splashing across the vat. The sudden roar was no figure of speech; the room truly beat like a marching band, drowning her first conclusions.

Her shoulders squared, she tried again, this time sliding the paddle beneath the mould’s edge. The added water loosened a faint seam, and two nested frames drifted apart with a sigh. Only when the top frame tipped did she notice thin reeds threaded through its sides, perennial fibers from last season’s rushes pressed flat and forgotten. The discovery stirred a pause; she had assumed every mould inside the mill matched the current pattern, yet this relic spoke of an earlier batch. What stopped her was the decision between shelving it for study or sending it through today’s order. The steady hum of rollers reached a plateau while she weighed the choice.

She left the frame on the bench and walked the loft, listening as drops tapered to random taps among drying sheets. After one slow circuit, she turned back to the vat. The mould she first feared lost floated in place again, freed yet faintly quivering each time a far gear creaked. A ribbon of reed fibre traced the surface like handwriting she could not decode; it must have ridden there earlier, invisible amid glare. Seldom had the vat sounded so hushed. Mae stooped, gathered the reed with the scoop, then lowered the scoop back beside the vat rim.
