Ruby rested her elbows on the low stone parapet above the irrigation channel and watched Cole below. He knelt beside a wooden gate, his back curved like a question mark, while the last amber stripes of the day slipped across the water. Seldom had the channel looked so narrow; shadow and reflection pressed together until the surface resembled dark glass. A candid slice of light travelled along Cole’s cheek when he glanced up, and Ruby caught, in that brief flash, the impatience of his tapping fingers. Around them, insects buzzed in a thin, restless ring, their wings brushing the air faster than sight. Pebbles clicked somewhere upstream, then the sound drifted away. With gathering dusk colouring every ripple, Ruby wondered why the gate still stuck; the water collected against it in a mute heap, as though waiting for permission to move.
She climbed down the bank. Sleeves rolled higher, she felt for the slim branch wedged against the gate’s hinge. Cole shifted aside, the two of them sharing the cramped ledge without a word. The accumulation of small noises—trickle, gurgle, pebble roll—grew into a quiet crescendo; each change in volume revealed another snag of silt that had settled during the afternoon. When Ruby levered the branch free, water lunged forward, and the sudden release tugged the gate open wider than intended. The surge raced along the stone lip and spilled towards the secondary channel feeding the seed beds. That solved the clog, yet, almost immediately, an eddy upstream sucked at floating straw, dragging it toward the intake that protected Cole’s pumps. One problem slipped away, another swirled in. Ruby paused, her boot toe tracing the rim, unsure which direction deserved attention first.
Light thinned until shapes blurred, so she closed her eyes and let the sound map the flow. Only then did she notice a deeper rumble beneath the splash—a warning that the straw was piling against the mesh. With sight muted, the water’s evolving rhythm guided her hands. She raised the gate just enough for the surge to soften, then reached back, fingers trailing through cooler layers until they found the drifting tangle. The straw came free in small clumps, each handful tossed onto the bank where dim fireflies appeared and vanished. As the current steadied, their earlier crescendo faded to an even hush. Ruby opened her eyes. A smear of damp spread across the notebook she had left on the parapet; her candid sketch of the channel now blurred into grey shapes. She slipped the sodden pages into her pocket, while the gate stood silent under the uncertain light.
Translation
