Theo lingered at the rim of the fossil bed, watching a dark speck tremble on a sun-struck slab. Only when the dry rhythm shifted did the solitary cicada lift its wings, the rasp echoing against stacked layers that looked like pages pressed flat by time.
Dust settling in loose spirals, he stepped from shade to stone. The insect ceased its call, yet a faint ticking continued underfoot: chisel handles knocking together whenever a breeze nudged the canvas roll. He noted a repeating crescent pattern below the cicada’s feet, half lost beneath gritty film, and a thin sheen where exposed resin glistened like hardened nectar. The slab’s integrity felt doubtful; a slight tap produced a muted clang rather than a ring. Theo crouched, brush poised, then halted—his own breath louder than the hush around him, a small quandary forming between leaving the creature undisturbed and learning what lay beneath.
Were the slab any steeper, the chisel would surely slide, so he wedged a folded cloth under one corner and tilted the surface by a finger’s breadth. The cicada did not flinch. Instead, its body shifted as a whole, light as husk, revealing itself as an empty shell clinging by the thinnest claws. Beneath that shell, a stone imprint emerged, twin to the living outline yet pressed into tawny sediment millions of seasons older. Wind crossed the bed, carried the husk’s papery rattle to the far wall, then left silence hanging like a paused breath. Theo brushed twice, stopped, brushed again; each stroke raised more questions than it solved, yet the repeating crescents now read as overlapping wings rather than random scratches.
He straightened and walked back to the rim where he had first paused. The chisel he had lifted earlier lay where the canvas fold met warm rock; nearby, the vacant shell rested exactly above its ancient likeness. Theo set the chisel beside the silent shell.
Translation
