When the Light Fell Silent-

Faye pushed the amber-streaked door inward, shoulder brushing flakes of resin that glittered like crumbs of frozen sunlight. A single strip of skylight ran the length of the ceiling; through it, afternoon glare slanted across benches, jars, and the small motor that spun polishing wheels. Rarely had the skylight admitted so little light, and the lean beam forced her eyes to hop from bright pane to pooling shadow. A dandelion seed drifted near her sleeve, its parachute catching that beam for a heartbeat before settling on the varnished stool beside Kent, who already hunched over a rough lump the color of weak tea.
The two of them shared one lamp, its magnifying lens swinging between their stations like a slow merry-go-round. Each time Kent nudged it closer, Faye’s piece dulled; when she tugged it back, his wrist cast a broad silhouette over his work. Polishing demanded heat, yet too much friction smeared the surface into cloudy swirls: Problem A met Problem B and tangled tighter with every pass. Kent lifted the lens again; Faye’s file rasped in reply. Her wrists aching, Faye set the rag aside, then reopened a drawer to fetch finer paper, fingers grazing against a fistful of unused grits, the packets crumpling softly in her palm.
A sudden downpour drummed the roof, thinning the daylight to pewter. The shared lamp flickered, moisture having slipped through a cracked gasket, and shut itself off with a muted click. Silence followed, thick except for rain and the muted motor. Faye’s shoulders tensed, yet she did not reach for the switch; instead, she steadied the amber against her cheek, eyes closed. The block felt warmer than skin, edges uneven, one ridge catching on the corner of her jaw. As though the slab were glass, she traced concentric lines left by earlier passes, feeling where resistance changed. It was the sudden silence that caught them both, making even Kent pause, cloth halted mid-circle.
She pivoted the lump, guided now by touch and the pine-sweet scent rising from warming resin, and resumed with the finest paper, letting rhythm rather than sight keep pressure even. Kent, observing the new method, lowered his own tool to listen for the whisper of grit instead of chasing the dim light. Neither fix erased both problems, yet the compromise eased their tug-of-lamp quarrel, and the surface under Faye’s fingers began to grow clearer despite the gloom. Outside, rain eased to scattered drops; inside, she forged ahead without lifting her gaze, a faint amber glow slipping along her knuckles while the lamp hung dormant and dark.
Translation
