Grant unpacked a brass kettle whose lid rattled against dried sprigs of an alpine herb. He poured ground shells, water, and powdered clay into the throat, the mixture swirling into a pale concoction meant to solidify around the rod’s base. The dune objected: every scoop he added deepened a funnel that pulled the rod off plumb. “Still reading?” he asked without looking up. They wedged it against the rod; the humming ceased, the crest held, yet the horizon line no longer aligned with any scale on the page. Grant tapped the closed notebook once, then left it unopened. Sand already crept over the carving’s back, rounding its fins, while the rod stood upright but strangely unanchored, a slender shadow stretching across rippled grit as the light thinned.
