Greta slipped through the tall workshop doorway and let the outside glare collapse behind her. The stone floor lent a cool hush to her steps while her eyes adjusted to the gentler glow within. Sun-struck dust, fractured by the high lattice, slanted toward the indigo vat and pooled over its rim like liquid brass. Rarely had the room glittered with such filtered radiance, and, for a heartbeat, the courier due before dusk vanished from thought. She unrolled a bolt of plain cloth, its fibers almost yellow-green, and guided it with wooden tongs into the still liquid. The surface barely rippled; only an earthy sweetness drifted upward, hinting at slow work hidden from sight.
She counted ten slow breaths, lifted the cloth, and watched air begin its quiet alchemy. While the hue shifted, she tried not to ruminate on the ticking clock beyond the shutters. The shade deepened by degrees—first moss, then teal—each step consuming another minute of shrinking afternoon. Imagined footsteps hurried somewhere outside, urging a second plunge. The cloth half-wrung, she hesitated; droplets pattered back into the vat, dotting the floor with sapphire freckles. It was the slanted beam against the far wall that exposed a faint streak where colour clustered unevenly, and the sting of waste pricked across her knuckles.
Boots scuffed at the threshold; Cruz arrived, arms piled with baskets of fresh culinary herbs destined for evening stew. A breeze followed him, stirring kettle steam and threading peppery fragrance through the shafts of light. Perceptive as ever, he set the baskets down and regarded the cloth. “Toward the door, maybe?” His words carried quiet empathy, nothing more. Together they lifted the fabric, angling it toward the sunlit stripe, yet their shift flung indigo droplets onto a folded sample sheet resting near the rack. The pale linen now wore a bold comet-shaped stain that darkened with each new breath of air.
Greta winced; rescuing the customer’s sample required clean water at once, but rinsing would leach the precious blue still blooming in her own bolt. Two problems tangled like threads: preserve one cloth and sacrifice the other, or accept a blemish and keep the depth she had coaxed so patiently. Voices drifted from the street gate—the courier approaching. Cruz lowered his end, dye trailing from the edge in darker rivulets, while Greta scanned benches, racks, even the dusty sill; an answer refused every corner. Fingers stained to the wrist, she hovered above the rinse bucket, sunlight sliding across her skin, and the choice trembled, still unmade.
Translation
