The rustle of paper bags skimmed over wooden crates while Opal steered a narrow handcart between jammed stalls. Peppery heat drifted from crushed coriander on the cart, mixing with sugary mango scent from a neighboring stack. Opal had arrived earlier than usual, hunting the last bundle of fresh carnations before the noon crowd. Oscar, standing at the spice counter, inhaled its smoky cumin haze and reached across the aisle, his sleeve brushing a stone sphinx. The lane’s congestion slowed both bodies; resourcefulness showed in their shared nod as they inched past, twisting shoulders to keep balance.
Several baskets had been repaired with bent forks and tape, their shabby edges broadcasting quiet resourcefulness. A stall beyond them displayed bowls painted in bright spirals. The pigments were so ripe they almost tasted citrus, offering a visible outlook on life through color alone. Opal paused beside the flower pail, yet her cart wheel nudged the crate that supported the sphinx. The slight bump rocked the crate; the sphinx toppled and struck a row of brass scoops. The scoops slid like metal dominoes into a vinegar jar balanced on a thin board. A sharp, sour breath escaped as the jar wobbled on its rim.
If the glass crashed, brine would flood the gravel, so Oscar lunged, his palms smelling of nutmeg dust. His grasp slowed the jar, but the board shot forward, shoving Opal’s cart a handspan. Peppery powder burst upward, quickly stinging every nose and coating tongues with gritty fire. The commotion spread only a single step farther along the narrow lane before pausing. A burlap sack slipped from the cart and wedged beneath a wheel, halting the rolling mess. Tenacity worked quietly now; both youngsters bent through the tangy cloud, lifted the sack together, and eased the cart back. The vendor slid a folded cloth under the vinegar jar, blocking further sway. Opal bought her single carnation, tucked it behind Oscar’s ear, and strolled toward the sunlit square. A faint thread of coriander dust kept drifting across the gravel after they had gone.
Translation
