Grey clouds crossed the sky, dimming the light, as the first raindrops pocked the gravel at this juncture. Water had started to pool, yet the shallow drain remained silent. Lily scanned the playground edge; a plastic sand rake leaned against the low fence, its tines catching faint light. Minutes later the cloud fringe thinned, and weak sunlight crept back across the path. Lily walked once more to the slot that had gleamed empty earlier; it now framed flowing water instead of dull grit. A light gurgle rose from beneath the stones, mixing with distant pigeon calls under the gazebo roof. At the pond edge, a single duck paddled through clearer reflections, its silhouette sliding between bright patches. She set the marble on the railing, where scattered drops blinked around it, and headed toward the gazebo.
