She had been the village cake designer for years, and today she hunted flawless fruit for a ceremonial cake prepared for the harvest supper. The fresh bruises slowed her search; she sought unmarked pieces. Spotting Dorian’s awkward stance, she angled the ladder from below, one boot braced against a root to keep the frame steady. Their shared weight drew the swaying branch within his fingertips. He curled rough skin around the stem, twisted twice, and the pear eased free without noise. He passed it down; Ada laid it on the platter, its warm surface cushioned with folded cloth. Together they gathered three more, enough to finish her design and to top Dorian’s basket without crowding. He lifted the basket carefully, the woven rim pressing softly into his palms as they walked toward the distant sorting table.

A faint sweetness—half crushed grass, half ripe fruit—lingered in the aisle after their footsteps faded.
