The ribbon's edge felt waxy against Kent's thumb while warm air rose from the wrapping station. He snapped his wrist to launch the strip, aiming to bind the gerbera stems into tidy togetherness. The ribbon slid one full circuit, then the spool seized and spat a loose ring that coiled around his wrist. The ribbon had been wound too tightly inside the core, so each fresh tug made the knot burgeon like a climbing vine. With the bouquet still unfinished, he laid the twisted bundle aside and turned toward other tasks crowding the shop.
A delivery bell jingled, so Kent crossed to the entrance where a box of lilies waited beside shallow puddles from morning rain. The box was heavier than it looked; damp cardboard bowed against his forearm before he eased it onto the work counter. Inside, lilies were being kept in the back cooler; he slid the fogged door open and placed them in a vacant bucket. Moist air clung to his sleeves as he stepped out and misted the outdoor daisies, tiny droplets catching late afternoon light. A sudden whirl from the ceiling fan scattered two sheets of tissue paper, sending them spinning under the wrapping table. A glance at the order board showed he would soon embark on a wide sunflower display. Kent crouched, folded the fluttering sheets twice, then stacked them neatly beside the scissors chained to the counter edge.
When he straightened, Nina passed behind him and, without a word, placed the tangled ribbon spool back on the board. It rolled once, stopped beside the half-wrapped gerberas, and rocked gently with each vibration from the humming refrigerator motor. Kent reached out, but this time he waited a breath, letting the loose loops fall open before beginning the wrap again. He kept the pull slow, guiding the ribbon in an even rhythm until the bouquet sat firm and round in his palm. Kent lifted the finished bundle toward the front display, already focusing on the next order. Eased by his last pull, a narrow crimson scrap slipped from the spool and lay quietly on the floor behind his heel.
