A pale ring on the windowsill glimmered, showing where the seahorse watering can usually stood. Opal scanned the corridor, spotted the can inside the supply closet, and hurried to water the potted dahlia. The period bell could ring any minute, so she lifted the metal shape too quickly. Unexpected weight twisted her wrist; the spout jerked, and a ribbon of water slapped the corridor tiles. The spill gathered, then slid along a gentle slope toward the stairwell landing. Outside the open window, a speckled sparrow fluttered on the rail, head flicking toward the spreading stream.
The bell rang, slicing her attempt short, and feet shuffled past while she backed into the science storeroom. Inside, Greta balanced boxes of slides, asking for help rearranging shelves to optimize the cramped space. Together they slid a wooden framework for model bridges onto higher brackets, then nudged microscopes into a tighter row. A spare ladder had been stored beside the shelves, limiting their movement. Opal reached overhead for a stack of thick paper reams. The weight bowed her elbows and sent a dull strain across her shoulders. Greta wheeled the projector cart aside, and its rubber wheel bumped the partly closed door. That bump left the corridor door ajar, allowing the earlier spill to creep beneath the threshold unnoticed. Water slipped through a hairline crack between tiles, dripping toward the janitor’s drain hidden under the lockers. A second bell echoed, and both students stepped out, leaving fluorescent light humming above silent puddles.
During the next break, Opal returned to collect notebooks and found the seahorse can leaning against the windowsill again. Only half full now, it felt lighter, and she tilted it in a smooth arc over the dahlia’s soil. Water landed without splashing, then curved off the rim and followed the earlier trail across the tiles. Greta, passing by, slid a battered rubber doorstop forward, steering the moving line toward the metal drain grill. Opal stepped toward the playground window; behind her, a thin stream twirled through the drain slots toward the pipes below.
Translation
