English Original
"The compost bucket reeks today."
Kira eased the round lid halfway open. Vinegary steam rolled out, laced with the sharp sweetness of banana skins that had begun to ripen under the corridor’s steady warmth. She had already propped a doorstop under the supply-closet door, hoping cross-drafts would carry the odor outside. Instead, the air thickened with a pungent medley: peppery onion peel, yeasty bread crust, and a faint metallic tang from yesterday’s apple cores. Beyond the doorway, a trellis of tomato vines—part of the biology project—spread along the window ledge; their green fruit now smelled grassy, promising a future burst of red. Kira needed only three more spoonfuls of scraps before the bell, yet a sudden, buzzing cloud erupted from the bucket. A plethora of tiny fruit flies spiraled upward, their sour-cider scent strong enough to distract even her.
The swirling insects darted toward the corridor’s small quail cage. The quail, startled by the moving specks, kicked against the wire floor. Its feed cup—heavy with toasted grain that carried a warm, cereal smell—tipped forward. Pellets scattered across the tiles and slid beneath a shelf stacked with jars of thick poster paint prepared by the art club’s young artisan students. One jar, coated in dried ochre drips that smelled faintly chalky, began to roll. It nudged a second jar, and together they bumped the leg of a mop bucket filled with cloudy pine-scented water. Liquid sloshed over the rim, thinning the paint’s sticky path and speeding the rolling jars toward the stairwell. Kira lunged, pressed a sponge against the floor, and wedged a wooden ruler between the jars. Water soaked the sponge; the jars slowed, then stayed wedged against her improvised dam. The cascade lost momentum, and the quail settled back to quiet pecks among feed dust that now smelled like damp grain.
On the floor above, Grant leaned over the balcony rail, nose wrinkling at the unfamiliar brew of vinegar and pine drifting upward. A worksheet, loosened by the same draft that carried the odor, glided past his elbow and wheeled toward the lower landing.
Translation
