Chilled moisture filmed Thea’s fingertips as she pressed a damp floral foam block onto the rubber board at the work counter. Sweet marigold sap mixed with a peppery carnation odor, drifting above the buckets arranged behind her. She had already soaked the block in a bucketful of cool, eucalyptus-tinged water donated yesterday through a small assistance program that supplied surplus blooms to neighbourhood shops. Orders seemed to leapfrog across the counter today, so she worked quickly; still, the first thick sunflower stem split the surface and crumbly flakes released a moss-rich smell. Nothing could persuade the jagged hole to close again, but she angled the second stem, nudging pieces together until the gap held a rough shape.
A brass bell gave a vinegar-sharp jingle. “Courier at the door,” Oscar called from the entrance area. Thea wiped resin from her palms, inhaling the metallic tang of the scissor chain, and stepped away to reach out for the clipboard. The courier’s boxes of wrapped lilies carried a faint cardboard dustiness that clung to her sleeve while she signed. The stop lasted longer than expected; Oscar needed help stacking the crates in the storage cooler, and menthol-cool air swept around their ankles. When Thea returned to the work counter, the foam block no longer felt cold. Warm air from the wrapping station had coaxed water upward; damp streaks crossed the board, and tissue sheets nearby sagged under their sudden soggy weight.
Thea slid a clean bucket under the lowest corner, catching the slow, earthy-smelling drip before it could spread farther. The tissue had already been blotched in uneven circles, but its colour stayed bright, so she unfolded a dry sheet and draped it loosely over the arrangement, letting evaporation continue without soaking fresh paper. A final press along the foam’s edge pushed the remaining pockets of lukewarm water into the waiting bucket, and the miniature cascade eased. She left the bucket beside the counter for later emptying and carried the half-finished piece toward the cooler, where fresher air would slow any further seepage. Behind her, rivulets along the board kept drifting toward the bucket’s rim, tiny streams sliding over the rubber surface on their own path.
Translation
