English Original
Crumbs had settled in the corner of Zara’s paper bag during the walk from the bakery, and a sweet smell still clung to her sleeves as she stepped onto the blue floor marking beside the parcel scale. She eased a small box onto the metal tray; the digits blinked 506 g, six grams over the permitted band. Her shoulders tightened. A clerk pushed the box back through the gap beneath the glass. Zara carried it to the narrow side table, elbows brushing the taped edge. She peeled away a square of bubble wrap, removed one slice of the almond cookie loaf, and slipped that slice into a spare napkin resting in her bag. The customs form had been completed in firm blue letters, so she left it untouched. Back at the counter she pivoted the box, placing it lengthwise this time, but the display still flashed red.
A light tug at her calf made her knees bend. A terrier at Iris’s feet stretched upward to give a paw, its tiny pads warm against Zara’s wrist. Iris steadied the dog’s leash and set down a folded gourmet brochure that had fallen from her own parcel; its paper felt lighter than the bubble wrap Zara had just discarded. They traded materials without a word. Zara unwrapped another cookie, nudging crumbs into the napkin, and lined the gap with the thin brochure sheet. The same resistance returned: the scale demanded precision. She shifted weight from heel to toe, drew a slow breath, and pressed the lid once more. The scale that had flashed red earlier now showed 498 g, its green digits steady above the reflective tray.
Translation
