Finn slid the toaster’s crumb tray out with a thin scrape, sending pale crumbs across the steel-grey counter. He wanted a clean patch of space for his toast, so he lifted the top plate from a wobbling stack and laid it on the damp surface beside the milk jug. Condensation formed an elliptical ring under the jug; the new plate covered most of it, and the glossy ceramic shone like ice under the ceiling light. Beside the napkin holder lay a small plastic syringe—last night it had been filled with vanilla for pancakes, now it rolled idly between two sticky jam jars. Finn nudged it aside, then crouched to fetch a spoon that had slipped behind the kettle’s cord.
The first plate still slid a little, so he had already balanced a second one on top, hoping extra weight would stop the drift. A companion vessel—a ceramic cup—followed as further ballast. The crowded tower pressed against the cereal box; flakes rattled inside the inner bag. Steam from the kettle fogged the nearby window, and the cord tugged again when Finn pulled the kettle clear of its base. The motion toppled the spoon jar, which bumped the cup, which nudged the plates. The improvised barrier quivered, and milk from the jug sloshed into the waiting ring, widening the silver puddle.
Finn saw the middle plate slide first. He slid his hand between cup and lower plate and drew that middle plate straight out. The upper cup lowered neatly onto the bottom plate, its base gripping the wet ceramic with unexpected steadiness. The spoon jar rocked once, then became still. Finn lifted the freed plate, tipped the milk ring into the sink, and left the plate drying near the window. Toast cooled on the chrome rack, and a pale trail of crumbs marked the spot where the plates had stood.
Translation
